About Siphile Development Agency
Who We Are
Siphile Development Agency (SDA) provides support and care to families infected and affected by HIV and AIDS. Our work focuses on reducing the impact of the pandemic through community-based care, psychosocial support, education, awareness and practical assistance.
Since our establishment in 1999, we have worked alongside communities to identify people in need, connect families with support and strengthen local responses to public health and social challenges.
Today, SDA serves communities in the Eastern Cape, with our head office in the Nelson Mandela Metro in Gqeberha.
Our path
Our journey
1999
SDA established in East London to support people living with HIV and AIDS.
2005
SDA moved to Gqeberha and continued supporting HIV/AIDS-affected beneficiaries.
2008
78 community volunteers were trained to support communities across wards 15 to 54.
2019
SDA began providing psychosocial support to Orphans and Vulnerable Children in Kuyga.
Present
SDA continues community-based care, support, awareness and empowerment programmes.

Growing numbers of OVC require early identification, psychosocial support, material assistance and referrals.

Limited awareness and misinformation continue to place communities, especially young people, at risk.

Communities need information, testing, treatment support, referrals and continued care.
Stigma and Discrimination
People affected by HIV and AIDS often face stigma and exclusion because of misinformation and fear.
Economic Vulnerability
Families affected by poverty need skills, support networks and pathways towards income generation.

Supporting Orphans and Vulnerable Children with material assistance, psychosocial support, identification and referrals.
Psychosocial Support
Providing care and support to families infected and affected by HIV and AIDS.
Social Behaviour Change
Using community dialogues and awareness activities to strengthen knowledge, prevention and healthier choices.
Youth Programmes
Programmes including YOLO and Chommy address early pregnancy, drug abuse, HIV prevention and stigmatisation.
Support Groups
Support groups for foster parents and grandparents create spaces for shared support, learning and connection to income-generating opportunities.
Disability Support
Helping people with disabilities access mobility instruments and relevant support.
Poverty Alleviation and Job Creation
Community initiatives that support skills development, livelihoods and job creation.

The Better Me project responds to the needs of Orphans and Vulnerable Children and people affected by HIV and AIDS in Kuyga, Gqeberha.
The project combines psychosocial support, material assistance, prevention education, community mobilisation, support groups and caregiver support.

SDA works with government, community stakeholders and development partners to reach people affected by health inequality, poverty and social vulnerability.
At present, the Department of Social Development provides funding for SDA's Community Care Worker support through the Expanded Public Works Programme.
Additional funding and strategic partnerships will help SDA strengthen existing programmes, reach more communities and develop sustainable responses to local needs.
